As Australia navigates significant shifts in migration policies and rising economic pressures, the international student experience is at a critical juncture. In this challenging environment, Allianz Partners Australia is proud to release its 2024 State of Student Healthcare Report, offering a fresh, in-depth look at the challenges and opportunities impacting the wellbeing of international students.
Australia has the second-highest proportion of international students per capita, with international education ranking as the country's fourth-largest industry*. In 2024 alone, over 364,000 student visas were granted, boosting the economy while also enriching the social and cultural fabric of communities. The proposed migration caps, coupled with rising cost-of-living pressures, are introducing new challenges for students as they navigate life in Australia.
Now in its second year, the 2024 State of Student Healthcare Report takes a deeper dive into the evolving physical, mental, and social health of international students. It explores the rising stressors they face while uncovering opportunities for improved support, health literacy and culturally sensitive care.
Chris McHugh, Chief Executive Officer at Allianz Partners Australia, highlighted the timeliness of this report in the current climate:
“International students bring so much to Australia—economically, culturally, and socially. But they are also facing a more complex and challenging environment than ever before. Proposed migration caps, financial pressures, and mental health challenges are shaping their experience. This report not only highlights these challenges but also gives us a better understanding from which we can deliver more targeted and effective support for this vital community.”
This year’s report places a stronger emphasis on the intersection of cost-of-living pressures, healthcare access, and academic performance.
“We cannot overlook the direct link between student wellbeing and Australia’s success as a global education destination,” McHugh added. “Our role at Allianz Partners Australia is not just to provide insurance, but to deliver real, tangible support—helping students feel healthy, confident, and capable of achieving their full potential during their time here.”
The 2024 State of Student Healthcare Report reinforces Allianz Partners Australia’s leadership in delivering innovative, data-driven healthcare solutions tailored to the international student community. By understanding the unique challenges students face today, Allianz Partners plays a vital role in helping Australia maintain its status as a leading destination for international education and a global leader in the sector.
*According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, education-related travel services exports increased by $21.2 billion (79.8%) to $47.8 billion in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 19.3%.
